INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM

The Intermediate Program option  gives you the opportunity to learn the Introductory- through Intermediate- level repertoire and develop your teaching skills and understanding. An extraordinary training program on its own, it also prepares you to continue with the Advanced Program should you choose.

 

INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM DETAILS AND REQUIREMENTS

The PEL Intermediate Program is a comprehensive classically focused Pilates Mat and Apparatus training program.  It includes the following:

  • Pilates Mat:  You’ll learn fundamental movement skills as well as the Introductory- to Super Advanced-level Pilates Mat exercises, coupled with functional anatomy and kinesiology training as it relates to teaching the exercises. We will discuss modifications and variations, including use of the Magic Circle, small weights, the wall and other props
  • Pilates Apparatus: You’ll learn Introductory- to Intermediate-level exercises on the Reformer, Cadillac/Tower, Wunda Chair, High Chair, Arm Chair, Barrels and Periphery Apparatus. 

*Continuing Education Credits available (CEC’s) for Certified Pilates Teachers who choose to audit the lectures with no additional requirements.

 

INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM REQUIRED HOURS

The Intermediate Program is 602 hours. Students are required to attend all four Lecture/Demonstration weekends (described below) as well as complete practice and teaching requirements as follows.

Note that attending all four Lecture/Demonstration weekends of the Intermediate Program is a prerequisite to participating in the Advanced Program lectures, ensuring that you understand the basic concepts and movements of each exercise and how the mat skills are applied to the apparatus repertoire.

The 602 hours of the Intermediate Program consist of:

  • 72 hrs Lecture/Demonstration (4 scheduled weekends; see description below
  • 100 hrs Self-Guided Practice
  • 75 hrs Observation (up to 50% may be done online)
  • 200 hrs Practice Teaching
  • 50 Group Apparatus Classes (up to 25% may be taken online)
  • 20 PEL Lab Classes
  • 50 Mat Classes (up to 50% may be taken online)
  • 10 hrs Anatomy Camp
  • 20 Private Lessons with specific focus (see breakdown below)
  • 5 hrs Test Out
    • 4 Practical Exams (1 Mat/3 Apparatus) 
    • 1 Written Exam (Mat/Apparatus)  

The four scheduled Intermediate Program Lecture/Demonstration weekends (72 hours total) are:

Weekend 1: Fundamentals to Intermediate Mat
Anatomy Review, Pilates Principles, Return to Life Review, the History of Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Elders, Modifications, Movement Concepts, Fundamental Movement Skills and Intro – Intermediate Mat

Weekend 2 (Intro to Beginning Apparatus)
Intro – Beginning exercises on the Reformer, Cadillac, Electric Chair and Wunda Chair, Intro periphery: Toe Corrector, Foot Corrector, Pedi-Pole, Breath-A-Cizer, Magic Circle, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, Baby Arc and Arm Chair

Weekend 3 (Intermediate to Advanced and Super Advanced Mat)
Review Intermediate Mat with emphasis on teaching skills, Adv-Super Advanced Mat repertoire, Mat Extras, Wall, Arm Weights, Magic Circle Mat, Teaching Skills/Imagery, Postural Assessment, Safety/Liability, Building your Pilates Business, Special Needs Populations

Weekend 4 (Intermediate Apparatus)
Intermediate level exercises on the  Reformer, Cadillac, Electric Chair and Wunda Chair, Continue repertoire on Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, Arc Barrel, Pedi Pole, Airplane Board, Head Harness/Neck Stretcher, Magic Circle and Arm Chair

 

REQUIRED PRIVATE LESSONS FOR THE INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM

The 20 hours of  Private Lessons required for the Intermediate Program are specific, helping you hone your understanding and your practice and teaching skills at the Intermediate level. 

The 20 hours consist of the following.

10 Hours of Observed Practice (OP):

5 Hours of Additional Privates that may be used to work on whatever you wish to help you refine your understanding, practice and/or teaching
